The Wilson Primary School

Family Support Worker

Hello, my name is Sarah Rooke and I am the family Worker across Oxford Road Community School and Wilson Primary School. My role is to provide support, advice and information to the families within our school community. Parenting can be both tough and rewarding. There is no other job like it!

Occasionally, children’s various behaviours can be challenging for us as well as them. However this behaviour is often a way children communicate their feelings and needs to us, their adults. Sometimes if the adult changes something like how they react (e.g. shouting less or making an effort to have 10 minutes ‘play time’ with our child) it can really help a child with managing their behaviours and feelings. However, this is a big subject!

Routines really help children feel safe and secure. When a child has a predictable daily routine, it reminds them that they are in a secure, loving environment. Below is a link to Healthy Sleep Routines for Children.

A good sleep routine is the best medicine you can give yourself as a parent too! There are many phone apps such as the ‘calm’ app. This can help with sleep routines. If sleep is something that is a difficulty in your home there is a link below for the sleep page on the parenting special children website.

Food Parcels

Please feel free to contact me at school if you would like a referral for a food parcel. We recognise this year has meant many more people have struggled financially and there is plenty of support out there.

There is also a local charity called ‘New beginnings’ on Great Knollys street. They have a community fridge that is open Tuesday to Fridays from 6pm to 7pm where they offer a free selection of fresh and non- perishable food. On a Monday, they run a toiletries and clothing service from 6pm-7pm.

Please feel free to contact me Monday to Wednesday on 07597115474 if you would like further information on anything on this page.
