Homework
At Wilson, we believe that little and often is the most effective way to support learning at home. We would be grateful if families could support their child with the following homework activities each week.
Reading
Children should read at home daily where possible, with a minimum of three times per week. Please record each reading session in your child's reading record so that progress can be tracked and celebrated.
How to Support Reading at Home
Reading together is one of the most valuable things you can do to support your child's learning. When listening to your child read, try to:
- Encourage them to use a range of strategies to work out unfamiliar words, including phonics where appropriate.
- Talk about what is happening in the story and discuss the characters, settings and events.
- Ask questions such as:
- What has happened so far?
- What do you think will happen next?
- Why do you think the character did that?
- How do you know the character is feeling that way?
- What do you think the author wants us to learn from this story?
- Encourage your child to find evidence from the text to support their answers.
- Re-read favourite books to help develop fluency, confidence and expression.
- Model a love of reading by sharing and discussing books together.
Remember, reading is not just about saying the words correctly. Talking about a book helps develop children's understanding, vocabulary and comprehension skills.
PhonicsChildren who are continuing with Read Write Inc. phonics will be provided with phonics home learning videos to support the sounds and skills being taught in school. These short activities are designed to reinforce learning and build confidence.
Maths
Regular maths practice helps children develop confidence, fluency and number knowledge.
- Children should use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) regularly to practise multiplication and division facts and build rapid recall skills.
- Access TTRS here: https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth
We recommend little and often, aiming for a few short sessions each week rather than one longer session.
Login details will be provided by your child's class teacher. If your child is unable to access the platform at home, please speak to their teacher so that alternative activities can be provided.
Spelling
Children will be given a set of weekly spellings to learn at home. These spellings will support the spelling patterns and vocabulary being taught in class. Regular practice throughout the week will help children to apply these spellings confidently in their writing.
Thank you for your continued support in helping your child develop strong learning habits at home.
