Physical Education

Our Vision

“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong”

J.F Kennedy

As a federation we believe PE will equip all pupils with a greater skill-base, confidence and knowledge in a broad range of sports. Nurturing a life-long commitment in sports and physical fitness is at the heart of what we do by providing a safe and supportive environment. We aim to develop independent pupils that are confident in transferring their fundamental movement skills (agility, balance and coordination) through a wide range of sporting scenarios.

It is our aim that through the exposure of our innovative curriculum, all pupils will leave with at least one sport which they will be inspired to pursue in later life.

Curriculum Intent

In our school, we aim to develop a love of sport, movement and physical activity in all children and inspire them to become lifelong active citizens. We want all children to develop and improve the fundamental skills needed to access all physical activity across a range of disciplines. Children will understand the importance of healthy competition against either themselves (personal best) or other children, the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle, and the role that physical activity plays in achieving this alongside the benefits to their mental health.

Curriculum Implementation

Children in our Federation benefit from 2 hours of PE each week. A range of disciplines are planned and revisited across the scope of the school’s physical education curriculum. Children enjoy a variety of activities such as invasion games, striking and fielding, net and wall games, athletics, OAA, dance and gym as well as the specific core skills needed to be successfully active. Children in KS2 receive 6 hours of swimming lessons every year, ensuring that they learn basic survival skills in water as well as water confidence and the ability to swim.

Across the school there are plentiful opportunities to take part in competitions. Internal and external competitive sessions are planned in each year group to ensure that children experience this element of sport. Additional extended schools’ clubs run throughout the year, providing children with opportunities to try something new and hone skills learned in lessons.

An annual sports day brings the core skills taught in lessons together, children participate in mixed age teams, which help to develop the supportive and encouraging relationships needed to be part of a team; the sports day also includes competitive races. Staff receive CPD through coach led sessions, watching and having access to planning and support through a professional coaching company who teach each class at least twice a year for a term.

Children are taught how to lead a healthy lifestyle, linking the science and D.T curriculum to PE.

Curriculum Impact

Children will leave our school having a love of sport, movement and physical activity both in and out of school, with this continuing into later life. Children will have worked on their own aspirations in relation to PE and this will be carried on after leaving our school. Children will continue to participate for enjoyment and/ or competitively. All children will be able to discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how this is achieved, as well as developing the personal skills that underpin a rich and successful future: team work, sportsmanship, self-motivation, resilience and independence.
