The Wilson Primary School

Design & Technology

Our Vision

Across the Federation of Oxford Road Community School and Wilson Primary School, we aim to spark curiosity and develop technical skills in our future designers, architects and engineers. Through the design, make, evaluate processes, pupils will showcase their creativity, collaboration and innovation skills to solve real and relevant problemss.

 Curriculum Intent

Our Design Technology curriculum aims to provide a rich and engaging learning experience that equips our pupils with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to explore, create and innovate effectively.  Across the Federation of Oxford Road Community School and Wilson Primary School, we use Kapow scheme of work to teach Design Technology, which leads the children through problem solving design, make and evaluate challenges; developing their critical thinking and practical skills.  The intention is to fuel the fires of inspiration in our future architects, engineers, designers and chefs through technical and skills-based disciplines.

Curriculum Implementation

In order to meet the aims of the National curriculum for Design Technology, we have identified the following key strands:

  • Research and design
  • Skills acquisition
  • Critique, test and evaluate

Through our rigorous and engaging D.T. curriculum, pupils across the Federation develop a deep understanding of the design process, from generating ideas and making prototypes, to testing and evaluating the final product. Each unit of learning is thoughtfully crafted to inspire pupils through practical, hands-on activities that promote collaboration, experimentation and innovation leading to high quality outcomes.

The curriculum is carefully planned to offer a structured progression of skills and knowledge across Key Stages in the areas of textiles, mechanisms, structures, electrical systems and cooking and nutrition, building on prior learning and experiences. It is designed to be inclusive, diverse, and culturally responsive, reflecting the backgrounds and experiences of our pupils.

Knowledge organisers for each unit help to identify key curriculum knowledge and skills, as well as vocabulary. Strong subject knowledge is vital for staff to deliver highly effective teaching. The Kapow scheme supports teacher CPD and provides additional resources for this.

Curriculum Impact

Throughout each unit of Design Technology, staff model, monitor, address misconceptions and support the development of technical skills. Alongside this, learners will be given opportunities to overcome obstacles; taking risks and learning from mistakes.  Children will develop confidence, resilience and a growth mindset as they tackle design challenges, and through the use of technical vocabulary will be able to articulate their problem solving with others.

Students should leave the Federation of Oxford Road Community School and Wilson Primary School with a myriad of technical skills, resilience and problem-solving expertise and a heightened awareness of the impact of design on society, sustainability and global issues.
