The Wilson Primary School

Admissions

Admission to Nursery

Children usually join our nursery when they are three years old, and we recommend that parents register their child for the waiting list at around two years old. Choosing the right nursery and school placement is an important decision, and we do everything we can to support families through this process.

Visits to the nursery and main school are warmly welcomed and can be arranged by telephone.

Our nursery offers:

  • Morning session: 26 places
  • Afternoon session: 26 places
  • Universal 15-hour offer: 3-hour sessions (AM or PM)
  • 30-hour places: Available for eligible families

Please note: A place in our nursery does not automatically guarantee a full-time place in the main school.

Please click on the link for our Nursery Admissions Policy and Nursery Application form.

Am I eligible for a 15 hour place or a 30 hour place?

Go to the childcare choices website to find out whether your child is eligible for a 15hr or 30 hr Nursery place.

Admission to Reception Class

Children join our Reception class in September of the year they turn five, and places are allocated by Reading Borough Council Admissions Department

Please note that attending our Nursery does not give priority for a Reception place, as there are often more applications than available spaces.

For children allocated a Reception place by Brighter Futures for Children, we provide a holistic transition process to ensure a smooth and positive start. This includes:

  • Transition Day in school
  • Visits to your child’s current nursery
  • Home visit to build relationships and get to know your child and family

These steps help us create strong connections and support your child’s successful start in Reception.

Admission to Main School

All In-Year Admissions are arranged by Brighter Futures for Children Admissions Team on behalf of Reading Borough Council. Applications for a school place must be made to the parent’s/carer’s home local authority. Please apply at the Civic Centre, Queen’s Walk, Reading RG1 7AE or telephone 0118 937 37 77. Secondary Transfer

At the beginning of Year 6, parents make an important choice about which secondary school their child will attend. To support this process, representatives from local secondary schools visit Wilson Primary, and many schools invite children to attend an induction day.

We work hard to ensure these arrangements run smoothly and that all necessary information is shared with parents and children, helping families make the right decision for their child’s next step in education.
